Junior Volunteers

Introducing our inaugural (and may we say very awesome) Junior Volunteers Shari and Nick…

Both super stoked to have been an important part of
the Autumn by the Sea school holiday program!

After coming to the MDC on various occasions (careers day & science experience) Pam approached me and told me of the new program called "Junior Volunteers". Aimed at enthusiastic young (Year 10) people, I jumped at the chance and threw my hand up. In my first 3 days I learnt and experienced so many new things. Whether it be creating marine portholes with kids or canoeing with banjo sharks, I'm always learning about what the MDC does.

Being a Junior volunteer for this week has been a fantastic experience! I have gained more knowledge about the marine life that I have never known before, off both the senior volunteers and MDC staff. Some examples of what i have learnt are: that a decorator crab uses its saliva to attach weeds to decorate itself, and that a cuttlefish is colourblind. So this experience for me has widened my knowledge on the marine world thanks to all the people at the MDC.

We love craft!

Hannah and Lauren completed their last exam for Semester 1, loaded the car up and headed straight to the
Princes Highway
to lend a hand during the last days of the Autumn by the Sea holiday program. Both lovely young ladies are studying Marine Biology at Deakin University, Warrnambool Campus. Together they assisted a group of enthusiastic kids in making Wiggly Sea Critters.

This craft is awesome! We love it, kids love it! Cardboard fish, crabs, squid & cuttle animals were decorated with paint (very messy), paper, feathers... etc. The awesome thing about this craft is that the animals move! Once dried you pull the string like a wind up toy and the animals swim!! The designs varied between the group members but all looked amazing eventually. Overall it was a great activity to volunteer for.

These little beauties are a lot of fun to make & play with!

*Insider tip: create your own amazing marine creature race by lining them up in a row and pulling the string.
